Trailing her fingers over the dusty hard wood counter top, the heart inside her expanded, swelling full of regrets, of anger, and of sorrow. Tears brimmed her eyes before cascading down her cheeks like small waterfalls, never ending as the rain kept falling from her eyes.
Her fingers picked up chunks of dust upon those small ravines on the pads, dirtying her once pure body, just as the memories soiled her peace of mind. To breathe in the musky air was to inhale poisonous gasses from the past.
She took three steps farther into the room, away from the counter, before she sank down to her knees, surveying the sight before her eyes. Not a surface was untouched by the layer of dust that clung onto the objects she once took for granted.
Every object within her sight was a distant dream, far off in the haze of her mind, almost as if she'd just imagined them all, and suddenly now here they were, in this existence, as dusty as her heart strings.
Love, something every human on the planet is born with, if not by their physical parents than by their spiritual Father, was an emotion unlike others. Love can appear anywhere, towards anyone, at any given time, and it never leaves, never fades. Even if one forgets how to express the emotion, all they need do, with the help of another, is polish until it shines.
The historic sight before her eyes was a specific kind of love, and it was held towards one person, and that person alone. Lint filled cobwebs were in every crevice, there was dust on every inch of space, and sure enough all the metal in the house was rusted. The foundation was as strong as ever as the rest of the castle could crumble with just the simplest of touch.
It was all still here though, and the emotions that filled her heart saddened her. She knew how this had happened, knew how and why this love had been left alone for so long. She remembered tearing apart the walls, remembered smashing every object that now was within her vision. She remembered the grief she'd felt as she destroyed what had caused her so much pain...and happiness.
But it was all still here. It had never left. She could still repair the damages done, could rebuild the fallen through roof, could glue back together the important stuff, and replace other items. There were a few items that still remained within the walls that needed to be thrown out. That couldn't stay if this house was to be rebuilt, if the love was to grow and repair what had been broken.
Lifting her chin up, she rose onto her feet and rolled her sleeves up to her elbows, setting herself to the long road ahead of cleaning this house, of fixing it back to its former glory. Now, however, she knew the bad that was held with in. And even if she couldn't get rid of it entirely, she now knew to use great care when handling it.
She knew a house could be built with just one person, but a home took others, and should she fail, she'd still have a house that she could walk into, a place of remembrance, of hope, of faith, of peace and solace. The odds were against her as she repaired some of the most important pieces of the house. The floors had to be redone, new walls to be put up and painted, and beyond the amount of dusting that she was looking forward to.
But inside she had a small flame of hope. And no matter how small that hope was, she'd cling to the warmth that resided inside it.
Just a thought or two about relationships and how they work.
